Thirsty
Knight Antiques opened its doors in New Market 27 years ago
with an emphasis on antique drinking vessels such as cups
and saucers, goblets, beakers, German beer steins, other drinking
vessels. American country furniture and other antiques were
also featured.
Over the
years, the antique beer steins won out over other drinking
vessels and have become the overshadowing features in the
shop. Proprietor, Judy Stuart, has been affiliated with Stein
Collectors International for over 30 years and has traveled
widely to study and purchase the beer steins. Her late husband,
John, with whom she started Thirsty Knight Antiques was one
of the most knowledgeable people in the world concerning antique
beer steins until his untimely death several years ago.
Since
the 200 year old log building in which Thirsty Knight Antiques
is housed was once a boarding house for early travelers going
west to Ohio and beyond, it may be quite fitting that steins
from which one can slake one’s thirst are part of the
business in this house. Many a traveler probably had a drink
from one at the evening meal for the boarders long ago.
Thirsty
Knight Antiques is one of over 20 shops in the historic district
of New Market, MD just off Interstate 70 at Exit 62. The town
is on the original National Road from Baltimore to the west.
The quaint town also has excellent dining establishments and
a bed and breakfast for shoppers’ and collectors’
convenience. |
